      7 ways to approach your contacts

      You're not alone if you have lots of contacts but need to figure out how to use them to maximise your job search strategically. Here are seven simple strategies on how to use your network effectively:

      Clarify Your Goals: Know what you want from them before reaching out. Are you looking for a specific role in a particular industry, or do you want an introduction to a boss you've heard lots of good things about or someone you've followed and know your contact knows?

      Or, do you want to check on the type of work environment a company you are interested in interviewing for and whether or not it would suit you? Understanding your goals makes it easier to communicate your needs effectively.

      Communicate Clearly: Be concise and direct when speaking with your contacts. Vague requests won't be listened to. Instead, be clear about what you're looking for. Your contacts will then know from the start what you want and how they can help you. This assertive and clear communication will make them more likely to set up an introduction with someone they know who could be more helpful to you. This sort of introduction can bear heavy fruit.

      Give before you take: In networking, it's beneficial to give before you take. By helping your contacts achieve their goals, whether it's through an introduction or sharing your expertise, you build goodwill. This generosity increases the likelihood that your contacts will be eager to assist you when you need their support.

      Keep an Open Mind: Every contact, no matter how distant, can offer something valuable. By doing your due diligence and understanding their potential, they might surprise you with connections or insights that could be crucial to your goals. The more you learn about your contacts, the better they can help you.

      Build Strong Relationships: It's not about the quantity of contacts but the quality of your connections. Invest time in getting to know your contacts personally. Understand their interests, background, and family. The closer your relationship, the more likely they'll be willing to help you.

      Show Respect: Treat your contacts as valuable allies, not just resources to exploit. Offer your support and be genuinely interested in their needs. When you respect and nurture these relationships, your contacts will be more inclined to assist you, and you'll build a network based on mutual respect and understanding.

      Ask the Right Questions: Tailor your requests to your contact's strengths. Whether you're seeking a job lead, an introduction, or advice, ensure you're asking the right person who can genuinely help with your specific needs. This strategic approach will make your networking efforts more effective and efficient.

      Remember, effective networking isn't about expanding your contact list but deepening your connections. By fostering strong, respectful relationships, you can use your network to find the job that best suits you. Keep this goal front of mind as you navigate your network, and you'll find your efforts more focused and purposeful.
